Keeping a record of abuse
You may not feel ready to report domestic abuse now. However, keeping a record of what has happened can help if you decide to report it in the future.
A record may support:
- a police investigation
- a court case
- a housing application
- applications for support services
What to record
Try to keep a note of:
- the date and time of each incident
- what happened
- the names of any witnesses
- how the incident affected you
Injuries
If it is safe to do so:
- take photographs of any injuries
- keep copies of medical records
- visit your GP or hospital so injuries can be recorded
Keep records safe
Store records somewhere that the person causing harm cannot find them.
A domestic abuse support service can help you find safe ways to keep information and evidence.
